I'm a rule breaker.
You probably already know that.
But...one of the things they tell you to do when you start writing is to pick something and stick with it. By that, they mean pick a genre and write that. Don't skip all over the place. ("They" being writing experts)
Yeah. Okay. I don't do that. Since the onset of my writing career, I've been all over the place. I've written, in no particular order:
Main Stream Contemporary (including cowboys, billionaires, royals, military and every day people)
New Adult (College and High School Age)
Fantasy
Time Travel
Paranormal
Shifters
Menage (of varying degrees)
Gay
Historical
Light BDSM
Short Stories
Novellas
Novels
There might be something I'm missing. I'm sure someone will tell me.
What's my point? Does there have to be a point in my daily blah-blah-blah, LOL?
Okay, okay... My point is that I might be more successful if I had stayed the course to one genre. But the fact of the matter is, I might not have been as happy of an author. I have a diverse set of interests and a diverse set of stories.
What brought on this topic? I was talking to someone (a family member) the other day about my upcoming book, and they were like, "You write vampires? You've never written vampires."
Have I ever let that stop me? I reminded them then that my dragon shifters were blood-drinking dragons, part-shifter part-vampire.
This brings us to my actual point. Whether you're a writer or not, you don't have to fit into someone else's mold or expectations of you. They say to do what you love and the money will follow. That's not necessarily true. But I say, do what you love and the joy will follow.
So...I've found joy in writing new things, extending myself by having to learn new things (ALL THE TIME), trying out genres that excite me. Lately, I find joy in sweet stories, stories that wrench your guts out, adventures and paranormal. I hadn't touched anything involving magic in a long time then last fall, there it was in several stories and I had a blast. Now, come the Monster Misters. I hope you'll love them as much as I do. It's monsters and magic and adventure and destined love...all my favorite things, all wrapped up with my Brynn guaranteed Happily Ever After (TM pending -- I'm joking, I'm joking!!)
Today February 9, 2021
I'm working on my monsters (Vampire Bait) and I just started Harrison and Bronte's story, Geek Charming. They're up for preorder on Amazon. I'm also spending some fun time with my secret March project, though this one doesn't fall in the fun category. It's definitely more in the wrench your guts out arena. News about that later this month.
That's it for now, loves! Be safe!
~~ Brynn
